About the Lab

About the Lab:

Technology is related to multiple disciplines, one of which is linguistics, which studies language from various aspects, the most important of which are: sounds, word structure, sentences, and semantics. In the modern era, (numerous)technical linguistic disciplines have emerged, most notably: the automated processing of natural languages and computational linguistics, and other disciplines related to language learning, teaching, translation, and tools (and translation tools) have emerged from them. Linguists have also played a major role in the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and the construction of massive linguistic models (LLM), especially concerning chatbots, which are now a part of various walks of life. The mastery of dealing with these robots depends mainly on the language of communication through the Prompt Engineering, which is a purely linguistic aspect of formulating the request or command through which we direct the machine to implement the instructions.

With the emergence of academic researchers and scientists in the Faculty of Languages Sciences, the establishment of a specialized laboratory became a necessity. It was a meeting ground for these distinguished people: to publish their research, contribute effectively in the fields of study, training and development of specialized programs and curricula related to technology and artificial intelligence. The aim is to contribute to the achievement of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and keep pace with the objectives of the university, which encouraged the use of technology and its innovative tools in teaching, learning, and research by establishing an artificial intelligence laboratory.

Vision:

The Artificial Intelligence and Linguistic Technologies Laboratory’s vision is  to be a leading center in the development and employment (application) of artificial intelligence technologies in linguistics and translation, thus contributing to enhancing scientific research, thus providing an advanced research and application environment for the use of artificial intelligence and modern technologies in language analysis, enhancing the skills of students and researchers in linguistics and translation, and supporting research projects that contribute to the development of smart linguistic tools.

Key Areas:
 1- Research
2- Training
3- Building Curricula and Programs

Objectives:
1- Promoting scientific research: Supporting research that uses artificial intelligence in language sciences and translation.
2- Developing skills: Providing courses and workshops for Faculty of Languages Sciences faculty to learn to use smart tools and applications in linguistics and translation.
3- Community service: Providing innovative technical solutions to improve the quality of translation and text analysis and supporting language teaching using artificial intelligence.
4- Cooperation with external parties: Building partnerships with research institutions and technical companies in the fields of research, training, and developing joint projects in the field of linguistics, translation, and innovative technologies
