The Spanish Language Program:
The Spanish Language and Translation Program is one of the leading programs in the Department of European and Oriental Languages at the College of Language Sciences at King Saud University. Created in 1415 H (1994) to meet the growing need for specialized Spanish language and translation competencies, it is the only program in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf region that grants a bachelor's degree in this specialization.
The program's importance comes from Spanish's global status. More than 496 million people worldwide speak Spanish, making it the second most widely spoken mother tongue after Chinese and the third most commonly used language after English and Chinese. Spanish is the official language in 21 countries, including Spain and most of Latin America, and is widely used in the United States, parts of the Philippines and Africa.
The program enhances cultural, economic, and political communication between the Kingdom and Spanish-speaking countries, especially in light of the distinguished relations between the Kingdom, Spain and Latin American countries. The program also meets the needs of the labor market by graduating (with)qualified competencies in Spanish language and translation, which contributes to filling the scientific and professional vacuum in this field.
The program has achieved remarkable achievements, including international accreditation from the French Authority for Evaluation of Scientific Research and Higher Education (AERES) in 2012, and full accreditation from the Education and Training Evaluation Commission in 2024. It is a qualitative addition to the College of Language Sciences. It reflects the university's vision to enhance communication with the world and meet the needs of society and the labor market.
